AS PROMISED, T.J. got one last squeeze in before Fona left Geno’s Pizzeria. He refused to let her and her friends pay for their meal, which explained their oversized tip.

Fona walked slowly to the Flea to pick up Jack before hiking back to the cabin. She needed to collect her thoughts.

She hadn’t discussed the neglect she observed at the Banks house with Carrie or Mary Louise. Roy was passed-out drunk at nine in the morning. She wanted to empathize, but it bothered her. Wasn’t Roy allowed to grieve for his wife? Typically, she would have said yes. However, his daughter had just returned home from the hospital after being attacked. Who was taking care of Jazzy? She could suffer a mental breakdown or have reoccurring symptoms. She could aspirate while sleeping. Who knew?

To Fona’s knowledge, no other adults had visited Jazzy; not her ice climbing coaches, her teachers — not even Steve, her supposed mentor. If they had, certainly Jazzy would have preferred to confide in them rather than her. To use Lisa’s last words, Roy needed to pull it together.

Jazzy’d hinted that Roy’s drinking was habitual — he was a functioning alcoholic. Fona had thought he was just an arrogant jerk whose position fueled his robust ego. And maybe it was that simple, and he was merely drowning his sorrows — or burying guilt. Fona couldn’t shake the idea that Roy had poisoned Jazzy. But to what end? Was he trying to punish Lisa for bleeding money from their family coffers? Did Roy have a mean streak in him? Did he resent having an adopted daughter? Was Jazzy safe at her house?

Fona had ruled Maggie Venegas out as a suspect. A resin in the Gatorade, not one of Maggie’s delicious pastries, hid the plant-based poison.

The murderer could have been anyone angered by rent increases or land development deals. Those people would have targeted Lisa, but the poison was in Jazzy’s water bottle. If Jazzy was the intended victim, Lisa’s death was unintentional. Fona couldn’t figure out who would want to hurt Jazzy . . . except for Beans.

Fona hated that all the evidence pointed that way. Even Jazzy believed Beans was innocent — she had said so during their visit.

And who was the mysterious native woman? Jazzy assumed she was her biological mother, but besides their shared ethnicity, Fona struggled to see a connection. Jazzy’s hopes were understandable, considering Lisa’s verbal abuse and Roy’s substance abuse. She was looking for love and acceptance elsewhere.

“Oh, no,” Fona gasped. Her hand flew to the lump that rose in her chest. The epiphany stopped her in her tracks. Jazzy had beckoned Fona to talk to her, had desperately pled for her help. She had no prior relationship with the girl. Why would she confide in her?

Fear brewed in Fona’s belly, threatening to make her sick. No one would suspect that Jazzy had poisoned herself. Had she killed her mom and constructed the perfect alibi as the other victim? Was she going to
